AirPods posture tracking not working? What to check

Published

Start with the live status in Poise. No motion, paused monitoring and an unheard nudge are different problems. Check the headphones and permissions first, then the settings that decide when a reminder should play.

1. Check the exact headphone model and connection

Use the support list, wear the headphones and connect them to the iPhone running Poise. AirPods can switch to another Apple device; a pair connected to another device may not be providing motion to your phone. Reconnect them to the iPhone and reopen Poise.

2. Check motion access

If you declined motion access, use the app's Open Settings action when shown. You can also check iPhone Settings, Privacy & Security, Motion & Fitness for Poise. Permission labels can vary by iOS version. After changing access, return to the app and complete its live-motion check.

Audio playing successfully does not guarantee that motion updates are arriving.

3. Finish calibration

An unfinished or unsuitable baseline can prevent useful reminders. Follow the calibration steps. If you have already calibrated, use Settings, Recalibrate, and sit comfortably upright while the sequence finishes.

4. Look for an expected pause

  • Check Active Hours if the time falls outside your chosen windows.
  • Check the sitting or walking monitoring setting that applies to the current activity.
  • Phone-Awareness Mode can hold nudges during phone use.
  • Smart Activity Detection can classify movement as undetermined rather than stationary or walking.
  • "Nudge again only after lifting head" can prevent repeated reminders in one sustained slouch.

Those settings can explain silence even while the headphones are connected. Do not change everything at once: check one condition, then look at the app's status again.

5. Check background and foreground settings

Background Posture Monitoring is needed when you expect monitoring while Poise is minimized or the phone is locked. If that setting is off, keep Poise open for foreground monitoring. "Always allow nudges when Poise app is open" controls reminders while you are looking at the app itself.

Leaving an app in the background and deliberately force-quitting it are different actions. After force-quitting, reopen Poise rather than assuming monitoring continued.

6. Check the sound separately

Use Settings, Choose Nudge Sound, to preview a reminder. Check that audio is routed to your headphones and the volume is audible. Poise also works during calls. If you cannot hear a reminder, check the sound preview and your headphone volume.

If it still does not work

Open Settings, Contact / Feedback in Poise, or use the website contact form. Include your headphone model, iOS version, app version, whether the screen was locked, and the status shown when tracking stopped. Describe whether there was no motion reading, an expected pause, or a reminder you could not hear.
